Narrated Ibn Umar (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) enjoined the payment of one
Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim slave or
free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before
the people went out to offer the 'Id prayer. (One Sa' = 3 Kilograms
approx.)

Fasting - 29th Ramadan 1433 (18th August 2012)


Narrated Ali bin Al-Husain (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

Safiya, the wife of the Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) told me that
she went to Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) to visit him in
the mosque while he was in Itikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. She had
a talk with him for a while, then she got up in order to return home. The
Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) accompanied her. When they reached
the gate of the mosque, opposite the door of Um-Salama, two Ansari men were
passing by and they greeted Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam).
He told them: Do not run away! And said, "She is (my wife) Safiya bint
Huyai." Both of them said, "Subhan Allah, (How dare we think of any evil) O
Allah's Apostle!" And they felt it. The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa
Sallam) said (to them), "Satan reaches everywhere in the human body as
blood reaches in it, (everywhere in one's body). I was afraid lest Satan
might insert an evil thought in your minds."

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) used to practice Itikaf (inthe masjid) in the middle third of Ramadan and after passing the twentynights he used to go back to his house on the 21st, and the people who werein Itikaf with him also used to go back to their houses. Once in Ramadan,in which he practiced Itikaf, he established the night prayers at the nightin which he used to return home, and then he addressed the people andordered them whatever Allah wished him to order and said, "I used topractice Itikaf for these ten days (i.e. the middle 3rd but now I intend tostay in Itikaf for the last ten days (of the month); so whoever was inItikaf with me should stay at his place of seclusion. I have verily beenshown (the date of) this Night (of Qadr) but I have forgotten it. So searchfor it in the odd nights of the last ten days (of this month). I also sawmyself (in the dream) prostrating in mud and water." On the night of the21st, the sky was covered with clouds and it rained, and the rain-waterstarted leaking through the roof of the masjid at the praying place of theProphet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam). I saw with my own eyes the Prophet(Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) at the completion of the morning prayerleaving with his face covered with mud and water.

The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "Whoever fasted the monthof Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward fromAllah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for theprayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a rewardfrom Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven ."

Fasting - 19th Ramadan 1433 (8th August 2012)


Narrated Abu Juhaifa (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) made a bond of brotherhood
between Salman and Abu Ad-Darda.' Salman paid a visit to Abu Ad-Darda' and
found Um Ad-Darda' dressed in shabby clothes and asked her why she was in
that state. She replied, "Your brother Abu Ad-Darda' is not interested in
(the luxuries of) this world."

In the meantime Abu Ad-Darda' came and prepared a meal for Salman. Salman
requested Abu Ad-Darda' to eat (with him), but Abu Ad-Darda' said, "I am
fasting." Salman said, "I am not going to eat unless you eat." So, Abu
Ad-Darda' ate(with Salman). When it was night and (a part of the night
passed), Abu Ad-Darda' got up (to offer the night prayer), but Salman told
him to sleep and Abu Ad-Darda' slept.

After sometime Abu Ad-Darda' again got up but Salman told him to sleep.
When it was the last hours of the night, Salman told him to get up then,
and both of them offered the prayer. Salman told Abu Ad-Darda', "Your Lord
has a right on you, your soul has a right on you, and your family has a
right on you; so you should give the rights of all those who has a right on
you." Abu Ad-Darda' came to the Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) and
narrated the whole story. The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said,
"Salman has spoken the truth."

A man came to the Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) and said, "OAllah's Apostle! My mother died and she ought to have fasted one month (forher missed Ramadan). Shall I fast on her behalf?" The Prophet (Sallallahu'Alaihi Wa Sallam) replied in the affirmative and said, "Allah's debts havemore right to be paid." In another narration a woman is reported to havesaid, "My sister died..."
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: A woman said to the Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi WaSallam) "My mother died and she had vowed to fast but she didn't fast." Inanother narration Ibn 'Abbas is reported to have said, "A woman said to theProphet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam), "My mother died while she ought tohave fasted for fifteen days."

Narrated Tawus (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

Ibn 'Abbas said, "Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) set outfrom Medina to Makkah and he fasted till he reached 'Usfan, where he askedfor water and raised his hand to let the people see him, and then broke thefast, and did not fast after that till he reached Makkah, and that happenedin Ramadan." Ibn 'Abbas used to say, "Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'AlaihiWa Sallam) (sometimes) fasted and (sometimes) did not fast during thejourneys so whoever wished to fast could fast, and whoever wished not tofast, could do so."

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "If somebody eats ordrinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he has eatenor drunk, has been given to him by Allah." Narrated 'Amir bin Rabi'a, "Isaw the Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) cleaning his teeth withSiwak while he was fasting so many times as I can't count." And narratedAbu Huraira, "The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, 'But for myfear that it would be hard for my followers, I would have ordered them toclean their teeth with Siwak on every performance of ablution." The same isnarrated by Jabir and Zaid bin Khalid from the Prophet (Sallallahu 'AlaihiWa Sallam) who did not differentiate between a fasting and a nonfastingperson in this respect (using Siwak).
Aisha  (Radi-Allahu 'anha) said, "The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi WaSallam) said, "It (i.e. Siwak) is a purification for the mouth and it is away of seeking Allah's pleasures." Ata' and Qatada said, "There is no harmin swallowing the resultant saliva."

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):

While we were sitting with the Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) a mancame and said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have been ruined." Allah's Apostle(Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) asked what was the matter with him. Hereplied "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting."Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) asked him, "Can you affordto manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. Allah's Apostle(Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) asked him, "Can you fast for two successivemonths?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi WaSallam) asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He repliedin the negative. The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) kept silent andwhile we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to theProphet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam). He asked, "Where is thequestioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi WaSallam) said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it incharity." The man said, "Should I give it to a person poorer than I? ByAllah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who arepoorer than I." The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) smiled till hispre-molar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it."

The Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam)replied, "I am not like you, for I am provided with food and drink (byAllah)."

Narrated Al-Bara (Radi-Allahu 'anhu):
It was the custom among the companions of Muhammad (Sallallahu 'Alaihi WaSallam) that if any of them was fasting and the food was presented (forbreaking his fast), but he slept before eating, he would not eat that nightand the following day till sunset.
Qais bin Sirma-al-Ansari was fasting and came to his wife at the time ofIftar (breaking one's fast) and asked her whether she had anything to eat.She replied, "No, but I would go and bring some for you." He used to dohard work during the day, so he was overwhelmed by sleep and slept. Whenhis wife came and saw him, she said, "Disappointment for you." When it wasmidday on the following day, he fainted and the Prophet (Sallallahu 'AlaihiWa Sallam) was informed about the whole matter and the following verseswere revealed: "You are permitted To go to your wives (for sexual relation)At the night of fasting." So, they were overjoyed by it. And then Allahalso revealed: "And eat and drink Until the white thread Of dawn appears toyou Distinct from the black thread (of the night)." (2.187)
